नरस्याभरणं रूपम्
रूपस्याभरणं गुणः ।
गुणस्याभरणं ज्ञानम्
ज्ञानस्याभरणं क्षमा ॥

Beauty decorates the personality of a man.
Good qualities ornament his beauty.
Knowledge embellishes his qualities.
Forgiveness adorns his knowledge.


Forgiveness is a virtue of the learned.
To err is human, to forgive divine.

One who delights in material wealth gives up education.
One who desires to gain knowledge gives up luxuries.
How can someone seeking lavish life gain knowledge?

Treat your son like a friend

लालयेत् पञ्चवर्षाणि
दशवर्षाणि ताडयेत् ।
प्राप्ते तु षोडशे वर्षे
पुत्रं मित्रवदाचरेत् ॥
- चाणक्यनीतिः

A child should be pampered for first five years. He should be disciplined and spanked for next ten years. Once he is sixteen, he should be treated like a friend.


A son is a little boy who grows up to be a friend.

Whoever is wealthy, is also a great scholar.

अज्ञः सुखमाराध्यः सुखतरमाराध्यते विशेषज्ञः ।
ज्ञानलवदुर्विदग्धं ब्रह्मापि नरं न रञ्जयति ॥
- नीतिशतकम्
- हितोपदेशः

An ignorant man can be pleased easily. A wise man can be persuaded even more easily. But even the creator cannot win over a conceited snob smattering with his little knowledge.


A little knowledge is a dangerous thing. So is a lot!

Self-respect knows no considerations

क्षुत्क्षामोऽपि जराकृशोऽपि शिथिलप्रायोऽपि कष्टां दशाम्
आपन्नोऽपि विपन्नदीधितिरपि प्राणेषु गच्छत्स्वपि ।
मत्तेभेन्द्रविभिन्नकुम्भकवलग्रासैकबद्धस्पृहः
किं जीर्णं तृणमत्ति मानमहतामग्रेसरः केसरी ॥
- नीतिशतकम्

Though it is hungry for food, weakened by old age, going through difficulties, suffering from illness and senility, struggling between life and death, a lion always desires to taste fresh meat from the forehead of a mighty elephant. How can a lion, the mightiest of all creatures with great self-respect, feed on shriveled grass?


Self-respect knows no considerations.
Self respect is the cornerstone of all virtue.

Do what you say

मनस्यन्यद्वचस्यन्यत्
कार्यमन्यद्दुरात्मनाम् ।
मनस्येकं वचस्येकम्
कर्मण्येकं महात्मनाम् ॥
- हितोपदेशः

The words of wicked people are totally different from their thoughts and their actions totally disagree with their words. On the other hand, great people are consistent in their thoughts, words and deeds.


Say what you mean.
Do what you say.

Vision without action is a daydream.
Action without vision is a nightmare.

Success is an outcome of conscious choices pursued consistently.

Waste not fresh tears over old griefs

शोको नाशयते धैर्यम्
शोको नाशयते श्रुतम् ।
शोको नाशयते सर्वम्
नास्ति शोकसमो रिपुः ॥

Grief destroys one's courage. It takes away his knowledge. It destroys all good qualities of a person. Definitely, there is no enemy comparable to grief.


Let bygones be bygones.
What's done cannot be undone.
Waste not fresh tears over old griefs.
