यस्यार्थास्तस्य मित्राणि
यस्यार्थास्तस्य बान्धवाः ।
यस्यार्थाः स पुमान् लोके
यस्यार्थाः स च पण्डितः ॥
- हितोपदेशः

Whoever is wealthy, is the one who has friends.
Whoever is wealthy, is the one who has acquaintances (kith and kin).
Whoever is wealthy, is the man in this world!
Whoever is wealthy, is also a great scholar.


Money makes a man.

All that is not given is lost

दानं भोगो नाशस्तिस्रो
गतयो भवन्ति वित्तस्य ।
यो न ददाति न भुङ्क्ते
तस्य तृतीया गतिर्भवति ॥
- पञ्चतन्त्रम्
- नीतिशतकम्

Money possessed by a person ends up in one of these three states.
  • being donated to the needy,
  • having spent for basic needs or
  • getting destroyed.
One who neither donates nor spends, will have all his wealth ultimately ended up in the third state.

यस्यास्ति वित्तं स नरः कुलीनः
स पण्डितः स श्रुतवान् गुणज्ञः ।
स एव वक्ता स च दर्शनीयः
सर्वे गुणाः काञ्चनमाश्रयन्ते ॥
- नीतिशतकम्

Whoever has lot of money, he has a great family background. He is a well-educated scholar, a great orator and a patron of good qualities. He is handsome too. Affluence is self-contained with all good qualities.

A bird in hand is worth two in the bush

पुस्तकस्था तु या विद्या
परहस्तगतं धनम् ।
कार्यकाले समुत्पन्ने
न सा विद्या न तद्धनम् ॥
- चाणक्यनीतिः

Knowledge residing in a book and money loaned to others; when in need, neither that knowledge nor that money is of any use.

A bird in hand is worth two in the bush.
Better to have it and not need it than to need it and not have it.

A light purse is a heavy curse

दुःखं दुःखमिति ब्रूयात्
मानवो नरकं प्रति ।
दारिद्र्यादधिकं दुःखम्
न भूतं न भविष्यति ॥

It is said that hell is the place of intense pain and severe torture. But in reality, there is no pain (or torture) as intense as that of poverty, neither was there in past, nor will be in future.

Many a little makes a mickle

क्षणशः कणशश्चैव
विद्यामर्थञ्च साधयेत् ।
क्षणे नष्टे कुतो विद्या
कणे नष्टे कुतो धनम् ॥

One should acquire knowledge and wealth by learning something and saving every penny every moment. If a moment is wasted, how can knowledge be gained? If a penny is wasted, how can wealth be acquired?

Many a little makes a mickle.
A penny saved is a penny gained.

Be a fountain, not a drain

गौरवं प्राप्यते दानात्
न तु वित्तस्य सञ्चयात् ।
स्थितिरुच्चैः पयोदानाम्
पयोधीनां अधः स्थितिः ॥

One gains respect by donating wealth and not by accumulating it. Clouds which give water have a higher position and seas which accumulate water occupy a lower position.

Be a fountain, not a drain.

Learn as if you were to live forever

अजरामरवत्प्राज्ञो
विद्यामर्थञ्च चिन्तयेत् ।
गृहीत इव केशेषु
मृत्युना धर्ममाचरेत् ॥
- हितोपदेशः

A wise person should pursue knowledge and wealth as if he was to live young forever. He should practice moral principles as if death has grabbed him by his hair.

Learn as if you were to live forever.
Live as if you were to die tomorrow.

अधमाः धनमिच्छन्ति
धनं मानं च मध्यमाः ।
उत्तमाः मानमिच्छन्ति
मानो हि महतां धनम् ॥

Inferior people desire wealth. The mediocre class desires wealth as well as respect. But, great people desire only respect. Respect itself is considered as wealth by great people.

Little drops make the mighty ocean

जलबिन्दुनिपातेन
क्रमशः पूर्यते घटः ।
स हेतुः सर्वविद्यानां
धर्मस्य च धनस्य च ॥
- चाणक्यनीतिः

Accumulating the drops of water one by one, a pot is filled gradually. Similarly, one should acquire all the knowledge, dharma (virtuousness) and wealth with continuous effort.

Slow but steady wins the race.
Little drops make the mighty ocean.

Much wants more and loses all

पिपीलिकार्जितं धान्यम्
मक्षिकासञ्चितं मधु ।
लुब्धेन सञ्चितं द्रव्यम्
समूलञ्च विनश्यति ॥

The grains collected by ants, the honey collected by bees and the wealth collected by greedy get rooted out completely without any trace.

Much wants more and loses all.
Greed loses all by striving to gain all.

चलं वित्तं चलं चित्तम्
चले जीवितयौवने ।
चलाचलमिदं सर्वम्
कीर्तिर्यस्य स जीवति ॥

Wealth is transient, Mind is unstable. Youth and life are temporary. Everything in this world is short-lived, but the one who has acquired fame lives forever.

Nothing but fame, lasts forever.

A penny shared is a penny well-spent

दातव्यं भोक्तव्यं सति
विभवे सञ्चयो न कर्तव्यः ।
पश्येह मधुकरीणां
सञ्चितमर्थं हरन्त्यन्ये ॥

One should spend (invest) and donate, and never hoard the wealth that is earned. We can see that the honey hived up by bees ends up being stolen by others.

A penny earned is a penny lost.
A penny shared is a penny well-spent.
